"Hsp View Carnival Venice Att. Louis De Caullery Flemish School 17th Century Palace"
Oil on panel attributed to Louis de Caullery* representing a lively carnival scene with numerous characters: acrobats, rich strollers and children playing; scene taking place in the center of a square in the city of Venice in Italy, with its palaces in the background and a gondola passing under a bridge on the right side, Flemish school, vintage early 17th century. This painting is in good general condition, the panel has been reinforced. Note: some accidents on the frame, wear and tear, take a good look at the photos. * Louis de Caullery or de Caulery (1580-1621) is a Flemish painter. He is known for his architectural scenes, city views, genre scenes, allegorical compositions and history paintings. He is one of the pioneers of the artistic genre of court meetings and country festivals in Flemish painting. Only seven signed paintings are known of him. Two of them are entirely signed, the Carnival (around 1615, Hamburger Kunsthalle) and the Feast in an Interior or The Five Senses (1620, Louvre collection, exhibited at the Cambrai Museum). In recent years, a number of paintings have been attributed to him. He painted in a wide range of genres, including architectural scenes, city views, genre scenes, allegorical compositions and history paintings. His genre scenes deal with a wide variety of scenes: ice carnivals, fireworks, bullfights, outdoor scenes and allegories of the five senses. In the past it was believed that he traveled to Italy to continue his studies, possibly visiting Venice, Florence and Rome. This hypothesis seemed to be supported by the Italian subjects he painted as well as his use of color, which was rather innovative for painters trained in Antwerp. It is now accepted that Louis de Caullery probably did not travel to Italy. The Venetian, Florentine and Romanesque buildings in his works are probably based on those depicted by masters who had visited the peninsula.
