Oil painting on canvas signed Eugene GIRARDET (1853 – 1907) Represents a French soldier's uniform and a German helmet in the snow, a crow swooping over the remains. The winter landscape, the empty field, the dark and cold colors reminiscent of the desolation of a battlefield are reminiscent of a certain Romanticism which Girardet often demonstrated in his works Eugene GIRARDET was a French painter initially orientalist although he was inspired by romanticism as for this work. He was a student of Jean-Léon GEROME at the Beaux Arts in Paris. Bears his signature in the lower right corner of the work.
