Silvered bronze mirror from the Han period (206 BC - 220 AD) The back side of the mirror is decorated with 5 toads allegory of good fortune and vines. The grip is shaped like a toad and pierced to form a handle. These mirrors were signs of power and wealth in ancient times as far as Japan. The bronze work of the Han dynasty was of great finesse and the casting techniques were advanced. This context makes them precious objects, silvering on bronze was a technique reserved for the finest work for a power elite. These characteristics make it an exceptional mirror.
