Pastoral scene
Oil on canvas, cm 75 x 101 - With frame, cm 80 x 106,5
The painting can be attributed to the hand of Jacob Roos, one of the best animal painters active in Naples in the early eighteenth century. Jacob is the eldest son of Philip Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli (Sankt Goar, 30 August 1657 - Rome, 17 January 1706), and a member of the workshop whose founder was Johann Henrich Roos (Otterberg, 29 September 1631 - Frankfurt, 3 October 1685). Born in Rome, he learned art from his father (documented in Italy since 1680) and was influenced by the Capitoline landscape taste, according to a path similar to that of Brandi, which De Dominici says is present in the Eternal City in his youth'. Like his father, he creates paintings in which the main subject are animals (goats, cows, sheep) embedded in a natural landscape but also unusual and rich in movement, in which there are often ruins. His manner imitates that of his father: it is characterized by the use of intense brushstrokes and full-bodied, sometimes almost coarse, and by a strong contrast between light and shadow. The artist’s catalogue is still scarce, some of his works are preserved in the Historisches Museum der Pfalz in Speyer and in the Residence of Würzburg, while many others are emerging, thanks to the progress of studies, in the antiquarian market and among private collectors.
The present pastoral scene depicting goats, cows, sheep and shepherds in a natural landscape fits perfectly into the production of Jacob Roos; Our work reveals its aesthetic value and sensitivity 'participant of that rococo landscape' for the modern atmosphere, serene and archaic.
