Great Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork from the Venetian school depicting the prayer in the Garden of Olives. The episode narrated in the New Testament takes place between the Last Supper and the arrest of Jesus. Having reached the farm called Gethsemane, Christ invites the apostles to wait for him while he goes to pray. In the foreground we find three sleeping apostles (Peter, James the Greater and John) while in the background the soldiers led by Judas are arriving to arrest Jesus. The sky is torn apart by the arrival of an angel who offers the bitter cup to Christ, prefiguration of passion. A painting of notable pictorial quality, found in particular in the depiction of the apostles and in the drapery of their robes. The scene then takes place in a twilight atmosphere which accentuates the drama of the event with the chromatic contrasts. Large painting ideal for a large living room, for antique dealers and collectors of high-period religious paintings. Antique non-coeval frame in carved and gilded wood, with several drops of gilding (see photo). Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some small points. Overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 100 x W 180 cm.
