Georges LEVEQUE known as GERLES (Béthune 1919- La Couture 2021)
Student of André Lhote and friend of Edouard Pignon
Oil on canvas signed lower left, countersigned and dated on the back, 116 x 96 cm Georges Lévêque known as GERLES, is a French painter from Béthune born in 1919, and died in 2021. He began his career as a painter in 1942 guided by his drawing teacher Mr. Beaumont and studied at the Grande Chaumière in Paris where he became friends with André Lhote (1885-1962), Ossip Zadkine and Edouard Pignon who encouraged him to exhibit in Béthune, Le Touquet, as well as Drouot. Definitively back in 1968 at La Couture in Pas-de-Calais, he never stopped creating to leave us with abundant and diverse works.
Very attached to his region, he regularly exhibits in renowned galleries such as the Galerie Septentrion in Bondues or the Galerie Mischkind in Lille. He frequented the famous artists of the North on the walls: Lhotellier, Hémery, Hennebelle, Dodeigne and Van Hecke. He is linked to the Cubist movement, however he rejects what is too abstract in this form of painting and he will always seek to maintain a link with classical painting, whether through the subjects or through the rigor of his compositions.
He wants to inscribe modernity, not in the rupture, but in the continuity of tradition. He never stopped painting in varied styles ranging from naive figurative to abstract art, but always with success.
This beautiful work is a reflection of his talent.
