The engravings were made by Maurice Potin based on the monotypes of Edgar Degas. (1834-1917) purchased by Ambroise Vollard from René Degas before the sale of the painter's studio. Vollard undertook the publishing of two works: La Maison Tellier by Guy de Maupassant and Mimes des Courtisanes by Pierre Louÿs. He turned to the painter-engraver Maurice Potin to reproduce on copper these brothel scenes that Degas himself called his “little dishes of the day”. Mr. Potin succeeds wonderfully in penetrating the sensitivity of the drawing and the subtlety of Degas's tones. The company took the two men 6 years to publish the two works.
