Etienne HAJDU (1907-1996)
French sculptor of Hungarian origin. Studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, arrived in Paris in 1927 and became a pupil of A. Bourdelle. Bourdelle, then at the Grande Chaumière, School of Decorative Arts, he discovered the works of F. Léger. Naturalised, he did his military service in 1931 and 1932. His discovery of archaic sculpture and the Cyclades during his travels in Greece and Crete marked a decisive turning point in his work and his particular style. Around 1950, he joined the second "Ecole de Paris".
He worked with a variety of materials, including wood, marble, onyx, bronze, lead and aluminium.
Not forgetting his collaboration between 1966 and 1976 with the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres to decorate plates, dishes and vases.
He was awarded the "Grand Prix de la Sculpture" in 1969.
