"Painting Signed Richard Faxon (1816-1875) The Castaways Of The Raft Of The Medusa Romantic 19th Century"
Oil painting on canvas signed Richard FAXON (1816-1875) The Raft of the Medusa Represents a raft of shipwrecked people during a storm. This subject is reminiscent of the raft of the Medusa by GERICAULT. This painting illustrates the same event in a more Romantic style, probably later. The sinking of the jellyfish and the consequences on public opinion highlights the struggles for power and social conditions of the former noble emigrants who returned to France during the Restoration. Although inexperienced, they have monopolized dominant positions to the detriment of the nobility of the Empire. This famous tragedy was caused by the inexperience of one of these nobles who grounded his ship and allowed his crew to return to France on a makeshift raft.
