BARBERIIS Eugène de (1851-1937)

“View of Miramas-le-Vieux”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,
Old exhibition number “2” affixed next to the signature lower left,
Signed and dated barely readable manner "1895" on the edge of the canvas,

Large work by the Marseille painter Eugène de Barberiis which represents an animated view of the old village of Miramas. A goatherd on the path at the entrance to the old village of Miramas animates the foreground of the painting.
The second plan offers us a panorama of the surroundings of the village and the Berre pond.
In his Provençal landscapes, the painter undertakes a constant search for Mediterranean light.
With a delicate brushstroke, Eugène de Barbériis strives to accurately represent the Mediterranean vegetation.

A student of Bouguereau, Tony Robert-Fleury, Detaille and Berne-Bellecour, Eugène de Barberiis exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1878 to 1901. In his early days, he mainly presented subjects showing the daily life of soldiers.
In 1890, he returned to Marseille and turned to landscape painting. Subsequently, he settled in Sanary and painted its surroundings until the end of his life.
In 1912, he showed 80 paintings illustrating the city of Marseille and its surroundings at the Central Gallery of Modern Art in Marseille. Our painting may have been presented on this occasion.
Friend of local painters such as Jean Baptiste Olive and Édouard Crémieux, he participates in exhibitions and fairs in the region.

Dimensions: 81 x 130 cm without frame and 113 x 163 cm with its large original carved and gilded wooden frame.
