"Fortuney Louis Ernest Andrieux Dit (1875-1950) Fishermen In Their Boat In The Port Of Cassis"
Fishermen on board a boat with lateen sails in the port of Cassis at the beginning of the 20th century for this work by the painter Louis Andrieux Fortuney. Warm colors and the velvety touch of pastel by this great specialist in this discipline. The work is presented in a modern black frame, under invisible glass (Museum glass) which measures 58.5 cm by 69.5 and 50 cm by 61 cm for the work alone. Two small tears in the paper which will be restored by a professional, the work bears the characteristic signature of the painter at the bottom left.

Painter and pastel artist, his scenes of Parisian life during the Belle Époque, his Mediterranean landscapes and his portraits (gypsy woman, Spanish dancers, pipe smoker, etc.) which he mainly paints in pastel - his oils are rare - are today Sought after by enthusiasts. We also know of him some landscapes of North Africa, where we can assume that he stayed. Inspired by the sea, the Breton lights and those of the Mediterranean, he obtained the order from the State for important canvases intended to decorate the Ministry of the Navy but was never, despite rumor, official painter of the Marine He also painted numerous genre scenes depicting women in the streets of Paris. He is an expert in the handling of pastel, very fashionable during the Belle Epoque, and excels in rendering the velvety texture of fabrics and skin tones. Alongside a very Parisian inspiration, he displays in his seascapes and in his port scenes sketched from life an incisive vigor, which contrasts with the virtuosity of his genre scenes.
