The first 4 are rare photos of large racing sailboats ("May", and "Rex", according to pencil annotations), by Alfred John West, (each presenting the dry stamp: "West & Son, Copyright, Southsea & Gosport"), who was a pioneer in boat photography, long before Beken of Cowes, going so far as to invent a system allowing him to balance and secure his photographic equipment on his boat. ...
One of his most famous photos is that of the sailboat Mohawk, racing in Southampton for which he obtained a gold medal in 1884...
The other photos illustrate a trip to the "fjords" and lochs of Scotland from the west, the Hebrides and the Highlands, circa 1890, with numerous views of ports, sites and ships, including the famous SS IONA calling at Ardrishaig....
