Small cartel to place in brass marquetry on a background of red tortoise shells, Regency Period 18th century. Cartel of straight shape ending in scrolls decorated with gilded bronzes on the facade decorated with a delicately chiseled mask in the center. Gilt bronze dial with enameled cartridges indicating the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals signed * Jacques Cogniet. Tortoiseshell ogee top highlighted with gilded bronze falls surmounted by four turlupets. (a turlupet formerly remade) Original movement signed *Jacques Cogniet on the plate operating with its key. (suspension formerly modified) Bronzes and mercury gilding original. * Jacques Cogniet (or Coignet or Cognet, 1661 - after 1726), was accepted as a watchmaker as a "master's son" on January 28, 1676. He worked on rue de la Monnaie in Paris and became a juror of the corporation in 1691-92.
