We are offering for sale a remarkable Christ of Majesty in enamelled bronze, dated to the 11th century. This exceptional crucifix has a blue and red enamelling typical of medieval Romanesque art.
Here Christ is called "of Majesty," because it is a representation of the complete body of Christ, standing or seated on a throne in the center of a mandorla. This is the representation, favored by the medieval West, which appears particularly on the tympana of Romanesque and Gothic churches.
Characteristics:
Christ on the cross with a long draped robe, with parallel vertical folds, held at the waist by a golden belt. The robe, polychromed in dark blue, has long sleeves, contrasting with the usual colobium which often stops at the elbows.
Imposing head, representing a fifth of the total height, with wide open eyes, a narrow nose, hair falling in curls and a pointed beard ending in twists.
The widely extended hands are sculpted with an accentuated realism, and the fingers separated, a distinctive archaic sign. The thin feet rest parallel on a square board.
The face has an oriental Byzantine character, an important stylistic trait for this period.
Dimensions:
133 mm x 119 mmThis crucifix is a rare piece, ideal for collectors of religious art and medieval antiquities. It is a reproduction of the 11th-century Christ from Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe in Auvergne, located in Le Puy-en-Velay, a historic site on the Way of St. James. It is a profoundly spiritual piece and a poignant symbol of Christian pilgrimage.
Shipping: Very careful packaging and delivery.
