Rare Imperial Couple - Hina Matsuri - Japan Circa 1960

The term doll in Japan is "ningyō", "human form". Japan has a special relationship with dolls: Until the beginning of the Meiji era, dolls participated in ritual and religious ceremonies, imbued with the sins of the people who touched them.
Since the end of the 17th century, the festival of "Girls' Day (hina matsuri)" has been celebrated on March 3, also known as "peach festival", the flowering of peaches being representative of the feminine qualities of grace and kindness.
Little Japanese girls display refined dolls placed on small five-tiered platforms covered with a red felt carpet.
