"Urbino Majolica Dish XVIIIth, Hortense Schneider, Offenbach"
Majolica earthenware dish from the end of the 18th century, produced in the Urbino region in Italy. Decor of a scene from the life of Hercules. We see Alcmene and Amphitryon with infant Hercules. On the edge the attributes of Hercules (the club and the lion's skin) are represented. On the back the signature and a label indicate the provenance of this dish: it was sold during the sale of the collections of the singer Hortense Schneider in 1881 in Paris. Hortense Schneider (1833 - 1920) was the muse of the composer Jacques Offenbach (1819 - 1880), for whom he wrote the opera La Belle Helene, a role she created in Paris in 1864. A great reference for this very beautiful and rare dish.
