Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher - Geneva, 17th Century"

Pewter pitcher in baluster shape, quarter-round foot and cup and two-bud thumbscrew.
Hallmark of Pierre ROZE: Moor's head / C / PIERRE ROZE / 1609, received master in Grenoble before 1650.
Gauging hallmarks:
1° - initials PM of a gauge-controller, affixed twice, on the cup and on the tab of the cover.
2°- Savoy cross.
3° - date 1691 stamped.
Height: 28.9 cm.
GENEVA, Between 1650 and 1688.

The date of 1609 on Pierre ROZE's hallmark has no relation to the period of activity of this master but alludes to the entry into force of local regulations.
The gauging stamp dated 1691 attests that this measure was still in use and was controlled on that date.
The capacity of pitchers used in taverns, inns and various public places had to be controlled by inspectors-gaugers in order to ensure "good measure" for consumers.
In good used condition: Repair of the area of the lower attachment of the handle, a few scratches and a small local crack on the body. On the other hand, pitchers dating from this period are very rare.
Pierre ROZE was received as a master in Grenoble before 1650 and settled in Geneva at that time where he remained active until 1688. Bibliography:
