Waiting - Jean Laronze

Jean Laronze is a French painter, born November 25, 1852 in Génelard (Saône-et-Loire) and died February 12, 1937 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine)2. After starting out in commerce, he studied in Paris in the workshops of Jules Adler and William Bouguereau. He will quickly be recognized by his peers for his Burgundy landscapes shrouded in poetry. The influence of Jean-François Millet is obvious, but he develops a universe of subtle nuances and supple lines within simple and spare compositions. Its palette which borrows blue and yellow, but muffled by gray tones, can evoke certain works of Alphonse Osbert or Émile-René Ménard, the violence of the setting skies of peasant scenes, naturalist works close to Jules Dupré, finally this calm which emanates from this work also owes to Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Jean Laronze can be considered in certain works as a descendant of the symbolist movement within the Burgundian lands.
