Oil On Canvas By Wladimir Wechtomoff - Head Study « the Suffering »

Oil on canvas by Wladimir WECHTOMOFF (1903-?), titled “N*9 Head study “La Souffrance”. The bare shoulders, the gaze towards the sky, and the half-open mouth of the woman depicted on this canvas brilliantly convey her suffering to us. Very beautiful execution by the artist.

The label on the back tells us:

We can therefore deduce that this painting is part of a series created by the artist on the theme of emotions. This one being number 9.

Signed lower left “WECHTOMOFF”. The canvas is still tightly stretched on its frame.
A slight chip to note in the lower right quarter (see photo). Other minor chips, almost invisible around the edge of the canvas. The subject is not affected by these.

“Painter, he was born in Saint-Petersburg in 1903. He settled in Metz in 1927. He was a student of Victor Prouvé at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. Above all a fresco artist, the artist also painted portraits and designed stained glass cartoons. He decorated around thirty churches and chapels in Lorraine including those of Chatel-Saint-Germain, Lessy, Cuvry and Sorbey. In Metz, he exhibited at the Groupement des Artistes Mosellans from 1931 as well as at the Galerie Fragonard in 1950. He appeared at the Salon de Nancy in 1932.”
