"Maurice Soudan : “still Life With Cake”"
Maurice Soudan (1878-1948): “Still life with cake”, oil on panel 44 x 52 cm mounted in a beautiful silver Art-Deco frame with tiers 58 x 65 cm. Signed Mce Soudan, dirty varnish, small accidents on the frame. This beautiful Belgian artist went into exile in Toulouse during the First World War where he left pivotal works between the Fauves and the Symbolists imbued with poetry. A retrospective was organized at the Musée des Augustins in 1960. This painting with its rigorous composition is revealed by Maurice Soudan's deliberately simplified touch on an everyday subject in a very Art-Deco aesthetic close to that of the Basque Ramiro Arrue.
