Gouache located in Saint John of Acre Acre (Hebrew עַכּו Akko; Arabic عكّا ʿAkkā; also known as Saint-Jean-d'Acre, and Ptolemais in antiquity) is a city in Israel, located north of the Bay of Haifa, on a promontory and with a deep-water port.
Acre is 152 km from Jerusalem and is administratively part of the Northern District. This coastal town gives its name to the plain of Acre, which includes several villages. Its former commercial port, which flourished in ancient times, has now become a smaller fishing and pleasure port.
Signed Dated 1958 Gouache By Raymond Guerrier 1920-2002
At the age of 14, Raymond Guerrier worked in a Parisian photoengraving workshop. Fascinated by painting from an early age, he painted his first small canvases at the age of 16.
A self-taught artist, he learned his trade by visiting museums and exhibitions. It was in 1952 that his life was transformed. A dealer in the Rue de Seine, Gilbert Stiebel, opened his gallery to young painters to award a prize. Guerrier won the prize and his reward was an exhibition in Paris, followed by one in London. The following year, he won the Prix de la Jeune Peinture, which opened the door to success and recognition.
In 1954, he left Paris to settle at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. From his first very dark canvases to the warmly coloured, contrasting landscapes of the South, his painting gradually evolved towards a vigorous form of abstraction. His work is in the image of the man he was, robust and poetic. It is made up of oils on canvas, as well as drawings, gouaches, paper collages and enamelled terracotta sculptures, a craft he shared with his wife Francesca.
