GIUSEPPE MAGNI
(Pistoia, 1869 - Florence, 1956)
Born in Pistoia in 1896, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and studied under the supervision of important artists such as Giuseppe Ciaranfi, Antonio Ciseri and Giovanni Fattori. An eclectic and versatile artist, he adhered to the Macchiaioli current, later to the post-Macchiaioli and especially to the fringe headed by Ferroni, Cannicci, Cecconi and Gioli. A skilled portraitist, he favored genre scenes, especially of daily and rural life. Painting the everydayness of peasant life, leaning toward intimist themes, he repeatedly depicted the theme of mothers with children.
In 1914 he was awarded the silver medal by the Fine Arts Society of Florence, in 1916 he was awarded the gold medal, and in 1919 he was given the chair of Drawing at the same Florentine Academy. His work is internationally known and has received commissions from major collectors and art dealers. One of his works, depicting the Regina Pacis during World War I, obtained the Pope's blessing in autograph.
He died in Florence in 1956.
