"Large Virgin And Child & Tuscany & End Of 14th Century "
Large Virgin and Child in walnut carved in the round and polychromed. Standing with her left leg bent, Mary carries her naked Son on her left arm. She is dressed in a dress with a neckline closed with a small button, blousant above a belt whose ends ending in a pompom cross. A coat is placed on her left shoulder, one side brought to the front forming folds in layered waves. Many details testify to the finesse of the sculpture, notably the loose hair falling in soft, wavy strands, the faces with delicate and peaceful features, the left hand of the Child which touches his mother's chest, the spine of Jesus very prominent in his back. Italy, Tuscany, end of the 14th century H.: 126 cm (visible accidents and losses) The two sculptures of the Annunciation preserved in the cathedral of Montepulciano and attributed to Francesco di Valdambrino / Siena,
13/5-1435), offer a a certain kinship with this Virgin and Child presented here in particular by the surprising length of the legs, the broken folds at the bottom of the tunic, the oval face mixing softness and severity.
