Oil painting Landscape of Brittany by Jean Pierre STAUFFER 1927 - 1994 small format 24 cm x 14 cm unframed

A painter of the Swiss school, he studied in Lausanne, where he completed his apprenticeship as a lithographer and graphic designer, before attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
A talented graphic artist, from 1970 he devoted himself completely to his painting.
From 1972 to 1981 he lived in Provence. From 1981 until his death on 27 November 1994, he lived in his beautiful house in La Sarraz near Lausanne.

A painter of the Swiss school, he studied in Lausanne and apprenticed as a lithographic graphic artist in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where he attended the Beaux-Arts school. A talented graphic artist, he worked until 1970, when he decided to devote himself solely to painting. He left Switzerland to settle in the Orange region of Provence in 1972. He married a Provençal woman, Anne-Marie. He stayed there until 1981, when he returned to Switzerland. He then lived in his house in La Sarraz, known as Les Dailles, which was a fine showcase for his paintings, displayed in this restored old farmhouse full of furniture with a patina of age. During his stay in France, he exhibited at 13, rue du Mont Cenis, and the Roussard gallery organised an exhibition for him almost every year. His painting is calm and serene, with a preference for horizontal lines and a limited palette mainly composed of ochres and muted tones. His landscapes are rarely inhabited and details are relegated to the background, the foreground being occupied by large areas of colour in cameos, with no significant variations, but contrasting. In 1985 solo exhibition at A. Roussard Gallery, New York (57 E 57th Street). Also exhibited at Valloton in Lausanne.

Jean-Pierre Stauffer was interviewed by Nina Brissot-Carrel on the occasion of his exhibition at Galerie Annie Chevalley in autumn 1993:
"His taste for drawing led him to choose a profession that allowed him to practise his art: graphic designer-lithographer.
"If I didn't paint, I don't think I'd know how to do anything else! All my glances, all my thoughts, all my visions are immediately transposed into paint. I think about it so much that my eye has become analytical. An object, a landscape, a simple fold and I say to myself: yes, that I could paint, or no, that would give nothing away because of its shape, its colour... I've never dreamt of anything other than being a painter. I started drawing horses when I was four or five. I've always painted!
From his earliest working years, Jean-Pierre Stauffer set himself a deadline: to be free of financial constraints by the age of forty at the latest, and to devote himself entirely to painting! And he kept his promise! For a quarter of a century, Jean-Pierre Stauffer has been painting to the delight of himself and his admirers…
