"Giuseppe Riva (1834 - 1916), View Of The Naviglio With The Duomo "
Giuseppe Riva (Ivrea, 1834 - 1916)View of the Naviglio with the Duomo
Tempera on canvas, cm 49,5 x 69,5
Signed lower left "Riva G."
The present city view, signed at the lower right corner "Riva", shows how Giuseppe Riva, painter specializing in the rendering of landscapes wanted to continue the tradition already warmly honored and appreciated of the landscape pictorialism declined in the context of view painting of the mid-nineteenth century.
As can be seen in the canvas, the painter dedicated himself to the composition of city views, such as Venice and, in our case, Milan. The painting, in fact, proposes the view of a part of the Naviglio, so dear to the Milanese.
The painter outlines the city’s vision through rapid brush strokes with which he sketches the figures and architectural elements following an impressionistic manner, not reconstructing in a detailed and scientific way figures, buildings and details.
The choice of shades of gray and brown gives the viewer the typical colors of the city of Milan, which at the end of the nineteenth century was experiencing a profound period of economic and industrial growth.
