"Large Venetian Lace Panel - Burano - Tablecloth - Table Mat - 1st Half 20th Century"
Very beautiful needle lace work on this large hand-made panel, made of linen thread which can be used as a presentation tablecloth, decorative table mat or as a bed cover. Floral decoration largely fleur-de-lis, enhanced with small stylized arabesques, foliage and a frieze with geometric decoration materializing a table runner marked by two large cartouches. Tightly stitched fleur-de-lys giving the impression of basket weave in the background, in opposition to the parts made with knotted blanket stitch, which are more airy and light, thus suggesting a play of light and shadow. In the past, these pieces were lined with a silky or satin fabric.
Condition : Scalloped edges decorated with small wheels made with simple blanket stitch flanges. Note an attempt at reinforcement on a festoon (see close-up photo) which can possibly be unstitched to be worked correctly. The finish of the borders suggests that the piece was reduced in size, but nothing is certain. This does not alter the aesthetics or the solidity of this very beautiful piece which has passed the water test (hand washed by cold soaking). It does not present any particular fragility.
