Madonna and Child

Oil on copper, cm 71 x 58

The Madonna with Child depicted there repeats compositional styles consolidated in the sixteenth century. From the dark background emerges the Madonna, taken up to the height of the knees, on which stands the baby Jesus, who lovingly seeks cheek to cheek contact with his mother, throwing his arms around her neck.

This oil on copper shows a certain compositional essentiality, while paying attention to the details and mimicry of the faces, which appear sweet and well characterized. The shades used, among which green and deep reds predominate, are laid out by a bright and decisive brushstroke, well circumscribed by a graphic sign, especially near the thick draperies, which more than anything refers to the execution of an artist belonging to the School of Antwerp of the seventeenth century.

This painting is taken from the Madonna and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), a work that in 1650 reached the Cathedral of Innsbruck, located in the Mariahilfstrasse district. From this moment the painting of Cranach the Elder took the name of Mariahilf, or Our Lady of Help, a Marian cult that arose in the seventeenth century. The image created by Cranach enjoyed great success and was in fact widely taken up over the centuries by a considerable number of artists. As a result, the cult of mariahilf and its iconography from Innsbruck never ceased to spread, reaching Voralberg and other districts of Austria, throughout Tyrol, Trentino, and even Milan.

The work in question is a valuable testimony of the spread of the model of Cranach also in his homeland.
