"Pair Of Andirons: Ottoman Couple."
Rare pair of chiseled bronze andirons with double patinas. Louis XV style. 18th century. A Turkish couple with their heads wearing turbans is seated on a moving base decorated with foliage, one to the right and the other to the left, like a real pair. One of them smokes a clay pipe with a long wooden stem called Chibouque and very common in the old Ottoman Empire. Turkeries (decors inspired by the Orient) like our andirons, were very fashionable in France in the 18th century thanks to diplomatic and commercial exchanges with the great Eastern Empire. Old gilding still very present. Very good condition of presentation.
