Virgin Mary from a processional pole, bronze, 18th century
Processional poles was used in catholic cult for processions and pilgrimages. A the top of a long stick was a statuette of a saint or of the Virgin, in a niche or a little ornamented edifice. Without the original pole, statuette is here fixed on a contemporary stone base.
Sat on a hexagonal base, the Virgin wears a long tunic with a belt around the waist, whose a part is brought on the left arm. The head covered with a veil, she keeps her hands joined in prayer. The statuette is on a cylindrical pedestal adorned with three counter-relief flowers. The whole stands on a big spherical aedicule that figures a stylised church. Three big porches with a triangular pediment support a roof made of crenellations, tiled cupolas, and pointed top pinnacles. Between the porches, the edge is decorated with a crenelled frieze and vegetal scrolls surrounding a protuberant round bead. The bottom is made of a corolla with large petals.
Very good condition, brown patina, a bit of green oxidisation on the aedicle.
