“The pig market in Carpentras

Oil on cardboard mounted on canvas,
Signed and dated lower left: “Bonnet 1866”,

Rare painting by the Carpentras artist Denis Bonnet which represents a market scene in Carpentras and more precisely its pig market.
We can distinguish in this work the soul of a market with the conversations between buyers and sellers, the negotiations on prices, the animals waiting...
We can compare our work to a drawing by the artist representing a similar scene and preserved at the Musée de l'Inguimbertine in Carpentras.

Very pious, the artist creates religious paintings but also landscapes and genre scenes of Carpentras and its immediate surroundings which today represent beautiful historical testimonies.

Denis Bonnet is a self-taught painter born in Carpentras, from a very pious family of modest artisans. He settled in Paris in 1825 before returning very quickly to his hometown, which he never left. He taught drawing for almost half a century at the town's college and trained numerous Comtadin artists such as Bonaventure, Jules Laurens and Joseph Eysseric.
A talented copyist, he remains influenced in his religious paintings by 17th century painting. But it is in landscape art that the artist best expresses his sensitivity, his finesse and his sense of light. Famous Provencal author and author strongly attached to his region, he will donate his work, more than 300 drawings and paintings, to the Carpentras museum.
Furthermore, the Calvet museum in Avignon keeps a portrait of the artist representing Abbot Joseph Dominique Fabre de Saint-Véran.

A rare work, we can only point out three works by the artist for sale on the art market:
In 2014: “Carpentras, view taken from the North (1833)”, oil on paper, sold for €2,700 excluding shipping costs. sale.
In 2011, two works from the Chirée Collection:
- “View of the observance bell tower in Carpentras”, oil on cardboard, sold for €4,000
- “A market scene in Carpentras (1838)”, oil on canvas, sold for €3,500

The work is reproduced in the work by Jean-Paul Chabaud dedicated to the artist "Denis Bonnet (Carpentras 1789-1877)" by Éditions Comtadines, 2018.

Dimensions: 29 x 47 cm without frame and 42 x 61 cm with its original period re-gilded carved wooden frame.
