"Set Of 8 Watercolors, 1916 Representing The Holzminden Camp. Signed Roger Gaspard. "
Set of 8 Watercolors, 1916 Representing Camp De Holzminden. Signed Roger Gaspard. They are all framed. They evoke life in the Holzminden camp, located in the Duchy of Brunswick, at the end of 1916 or the beginning of 1917. Three hundred civilians, particularly from northern France, were interned in this camp. They had been taken hostage in November 1916 in order to put pressure on the French government, which was slow to release imperial officials interned in camps in France and Algeria, after the arrival of French troops in Alsace. The French hostages are chosen from the same socio-professional environment as the imprisoned Germans: jurists, lawyers, doctors or engineers like the author of these photos, Mr. Boudinhon, himself imprisoned... They rub shoulders with Germans on trial " "undesirable people" who were sent there as soon as war was declared, common law prisoners, pacifists, prostitutes...
