"Rest During The Flight Into Egypt, Oil On Canvas From The 17th Century."
This oil on canvas measures 38cm by 46cm and its gilded wooden stick measures 46cm by 56cm. This painting represents the Holy Family surrounded by angels during the flight into Egypt. To escape the massacre of children under two years old ordered by King Herod to eliminate the king of the Jews (Massacre of the Innocents), Joseph and Mary leave Judea with the Child Jesus, then newborn, to reach Egypt . The Rest during the flight into Egypt therefore represents a stopover for the Holy Family during this journey which is recounted in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew (2, 13-23) of the New Testament.
