We recognize the impressionist touch, with the juxtaposition of colors and the almost absence of contours.
Beautiful blue-purple twilight effect in the background, on the hills falling into the deep blue sea. The light lingers on the white blouse of the woman, who is wearing a boater hat. A twisted trunk joins the foliage of the umbrella pine, forming a frame within the frame.
Work testifying to great pictorial mastery, from which a warm and peaceful atmosphere emerges.
The work is in perfect condition, with no tears or gaps. It is offered in a beautiful Montparnasse setting, also in very good condition.
The artist
Marius CHAMBON was born in Arpajon in 1876. A student of Gustave Moreau and François Flameng, and a member of the Société des artistes français, he painted landscapes and still lifes, as well as a number of portraits: in 1901, he painted the official portrait of French President Émile Loubet. At the beginning of the 20th century, he visited the Mediterranean and painted several paintings, including the one we offer here. Subsequently, he focused mainly on painting the Opal Coast (Pas-de-Calais). He made numerous drawings of soldiers during the First World War. He died in Paris in 1962.
Marius Chambon spanned a large part of the 20th century and embraced several styles. The painting offered here was produced at the start of his career, when he was establishing himself as an impressionist painter.
The Musée du Touquet has several of his works and organized a monographic exhibition in 1998. The works of Marius Chambon have been the subject of numerous public sales.
