Dérieux Roger (1922 – 2015) – Landscape With Light Trees – Gouache – Signed

Abstract work named “Landscape with Clear Trees” by the artist. Beautiful complementarity of yellow and blue tones, with highlights of white.
The work is signed lower right. It was acquired in 1984 at the Galerie Saint Georges, in Lyon. It is placed under glass, in a dark marie-louise which magnifies the light. The frame is new, in unpainted light wood. The whole is in excellent condition.

The artist
Born in Paris in 1922, Roger Dérieux was the son of the poet and literary critic Henry Dérieux. His mother, a pianist, allowed him to grow up in an environment where music was very important. In 1938, he met Francis Picabia and, three years later, he took up painting. Requisitioned during the war, he found himself in Salzburg where he painted buildings and theater sets. Returning to France at the end of the war, he enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and in the workshop of André Lhote. Poetry takes on even more importance when he meets Imre Pan and Francis Ponge. He then participated in numerous exhibitions with Debré, Poliakoff, Estève and Soulages. With elegance and great economy of means, he painted still lifes, landscapes and some figures in the studio. In the 80s, abstraction became king. Loving the world of books, he produced around forty artists' books from 1950 to the 2000s. In his last gallery exhibitions, Dérieux stood out to a public very fond of this discreet work through crumpled papers and cut out. “An art without fuss like yours,” said Ponge of his paintings. But discretion is one of the virtues that painters must not abuse.” The other key word was balance. A balance, expert in shapes and colors. Roger Dérieux died in 2015 in Lot.
