*Étienne Fermigier is a French designer born on August 12, 1932 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. Died in 1973, in Puiseaux (Loiret). He received initial training at the Boulle school, before graduating from the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD) in 1957. Two years later, in 1959, Étienne Fermigier joined forces with his comrade school, Pierre Perrigault, to create the Meubles et Function gallery located at 135 Boulevard Raspail in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Here, for three years, they mainly exhibited Fermigier's pieces. Thus, during the 41st Decorative Arts Fair in 1959, they presented the gallery's first historic showcase, entirely created by Fermigier. Étienne Fermigier is the only official designer of the Meubles et Function gallery, when the place opens. From 1962, it expanded to present pieces by Olivier Mourgue, but also by Italian and Scandinavian designers. In addition, she can be considered one of the first to exhibit Pierre Paulin, a great friend of Pierre Perrigault. Over the years, the Meubles et Function gallery grew and ended up opening several offices, Fermigier then became the manager of the gallery's design office. Thus, it becomes a reference for amateurs and professionals in the world of design. The gallery collaborates with many publishers, including Disderot, Téléavia, Steiner, Airborne, Minvielle, Sentou and Roset. In accordance with Fermigier's guideline, the gallery presents creative, rigorous and rational contemporary industrial furniture; concrete furniture, accessible to as many people as possible. In addition, the staging respects strict and elegant classicism, "a piece of furniture is not the product of a view of the mind, but the result of a perfect adequacy of form and function", Étienne Farmer. In 1967, Étienne Fermigier received the René Gabriel prize. The same year, with the help of around fifteen artists of all kinds, he founded the CNAAC (National Center for Contemporary Applied Art). Located a stone's throw from the Seine, in the Marais, it opened its doors in 1969. Étienne Fermigier was then a teacher at the Camondo school.
