"Pair Of Directoire Candlesticks, Sterling Silver, Ghent 1814-1831, Van Bosterhaudt Bernardus"
Lovely pair of Directoire style candlesticks in sterling silver (934%) dating from the period 1814-1831. They bear the guarantee hallmarks of the Ghent essay office and the master goldsmith hallmark of Bernardus Van Bosterhaudt, one of the most fashionable Ghent goldsmiths during this period of great economic prosperity. The style and typology of these superb torches are inspired by Roman antiquity and the Doric columns of classical temples which were taken up with great success by architects at the end of the eighteenth century. This model of candlesticks is rather rare in Parisian production but enjoyed considerable success with Ghent goldsmiths and their customers from 1790 on to 1830. They are of a beauty that is both classic and timeless. With their height of 29 cm, they are rather large and perfect for garnishing a long Charles X or Louis-Philippe table.
