Object description :

"Hippomenes And Atalante, The Race According To Ovid's Metamorphoses, Bronzes From The 19th Century "
Superb pair of mythological bronzes based on Ovid's metamorphoses representing the race of Hippomenes and Atalanta.
here the two protagonists are represented in full swing during the race which will lead Atalanta to its downfall.
the quality of the bronzes is superb with magnificent carving of great finesse, look at the beauty of the faces down to the very finely detailed sandals.
the patina is remarkable.
the two bronzes have foundry stamps on the terrace. very good quality of execution.

Atalanta challenged all her suitors to the race: only the one who beat her could marry her.
The others were put to death. Venus gives Hippomenes three golden apples, which the young man drops successively each time Atalanta joins him. Atalanta by collecting them allows Hippomenes to regain the advantage.

note that this pendant is quite rare on the market.
