Louis-Philippe period odalisque clock in gilded bronze. Devaulx Watchmaker. Large and rare model of a Louis Philippe period clock on a still Empire/Restoration model with its oriental subject reminiscent of the painting by Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, “the great odalisque” painted in 1814 and commissioned by Caroline Murat, sister of Napoleon I. A woman dressed in a drape and wearing a turban rests on an antique armchair including the dial, the odalisque holds a feather fan in her right hand, her bare feet are placed on a cushion, behind her There is a perfume burner. The whole rests on a terrace covered with a sheet decorated with a wide band of rosettes. The base of the gilded bronze clock is decorated with large foliage with palmettes, bases, laurel leaves and acanthus. The movement is signed on the S.Devaulx movement, as well as on the dial with the words "Watchmaker of His Royal Highness monseigneur le duc d'Orléans" (Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans 1810-1842, royal prince of France from August 14 1830 to July 13, 1842). The clock can thus be dated to the beginning of the reign of Louis Philippe. The gilding is the original, it shows some wear but is still very beautiful. The whole thing is in very good condition, the movement seems to work however the suspension wire needs to be changed. The clock has its bell and its pendulum, the glass at the back is missing.
