"Claude Galle Signed, Rare Stonecutter Clock From The Empire Period. "
Claude Galle signed, Rare stonecutter clock from the Empire period.

Very beautiful Empire period clock known as the "stonecutter" clock in chiseled, gilded and patinated bronze.
A Masonic allegory, we find Eros (Cupid) sawing the symbolic stone with the help of an ingenious construction made up of his bow, two arrows and a saw blade.
The oval base, with a central projection, is decorated with certain Masonic attributes, such as the square and the compass (the exploration of desires and passions while maintaining an educated moral framework) but also the flaming star (the exploration, the development and use of knowledge as a guide) and the hammer (pure heart, moral and spiritual).
The three stones of different sizes, on which Eros rests, could be a reference to Euclid's 47th problem, symbolizing the maintenance of order in one's own life.
The base rests on six pretty spherical pointed feet, reminiscent of the egregoric pendulum.

This beautiful clock is signed Galle rue Vivienne in Paris. For Claude Galle (1759-1815), one of the most eminent bronze workers, engravers and founders of the late 18th century and the Empire.

Very good condition, with its original patina and mercury gilding. Old small repair on one of the arrows.

Empire period.

Signed Galle rue Vivienne in Paris

This rare clock is illustrated and referenced in the works:
-From noon to midnight, the master watchmakers. Gottardini and Lecujy, page 171.
-P. Kjellberg, Encycolpédie de la Pendule française, Paris, 1997, p. 444.

Particularly rare on the market, we find an unsigned copy of this pendulum model sold at Sotheby's on April 16, 2016, lot 345.
