This miniaturist painting is organized into four registers representing the four weeks of the month. Nearly a hundred characters are represented.
It comes from the Volga region of Russia and dates from the mid-19th century -- around 1840/1860.
It is very delicately painted in tempera on a wooden panel in rich and warm tones. The saints' vestments and halos are richly enhanced with gold leaf. Calendar icons were often given on the occasion of a birthday.
Very good original state of conservation. Small wear from time and some cracks.
