"Fernand Maillaud (1863-1948) "banks Of The River Fauve, Creuse, Vézère" School Of Crozant, Berry"
SUBLIME oil/canvas board by Fernand Maillaud representing a riverside in the fall, signed lower right. Format of the painting alone without frame 33x41cm. It is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition with a Fauve tendency by Fernand Maillaud who paints here a riverside in the fall, in my opinion either an edge of the Creuse towards Fresselines, or an edge of the Vézère in Corrèze. Maillaud produced several series on this same theme, either in different formats or with some variations such as a flock and its shepherdess under the oak, proof that he was particularly fond of this motif and that he liked the composition. It must be said that he gives us here a real little masterpiece, whether in terms of the subject, the drawing and the coloring; he uses his usual impressionist touch, with small commas and here uses a tawny and colorful palette where yellows and ochres dominate, accompanied by browns, greens, pink, sky blue and finally a superb petrol blue. A composition worthy of the best achievements of the Berry master. I no longer present Fernand Maillaud, an excellent “reference” painter of the Crozant school, with his views of the banks of the Creuse, but also and above all those of his native Berry. His reputation is well established, even across the Atlantic where he had enormous success during his lifetime. Maillaud achieved fame thanks to his rustic scenes of the peasant world, but also with his famous market scenes; but he was also recognized for his orientalist scenes, his views of Venice or Paris in his early days, some of which are kept at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. He was also close to the famous poet Maurice Rollinat whom he sketched several times. His attachment to his native Berry as well as to the Creuse earned him a place among the best painters of the Crozant school alongside Detroy, Guillaumin and Alluaud. We thought his popularity was losing momentum, yet his paintings still sold very well very recently with peaks of over €3,500. So emblematic painter of the Crozant school, but also of the Provençal school, also renowned for his orientalist scenes, his portraits and finally his tapestries and even his sculpted furniture. This oil/canvas board is in perfect original condition, delivered in a very pretty old Montparnasse frame. Guaranteed authentic work
