"Representation Of Saint Barbara – Circa 1750"
Our Holy Woman is a Martyr from the 3rd century. She is the patron saint of firefighters. Saint Barbara takes her name from the Christians who, in order to recover her body, prudently refused to call her by her baptismal name, identifying her to her torturers as “the barbarian woman”. Here, she holds a chalice in her left hand. Religious iconography usually attributes a ciborium to him.
Delicately sculpted, gilded and polychromed, Saint Barbara is attached to a tripod base with a cartouche in its center naming her.
Very good condition – southern Germany – mid 18th century.
Dimensions of 47 cm high by 27 wide and 12 cm deep.
