"Russian Orthodox Icon - Christ Pantocrator - Icon "
End of the 19th century Russia - Muscovite School Sublime icon representing one of the most famous archetypes of Orthodox iconography: Christ Pantocrator. One who idealizes the height of Christ's glory and power. The face of Christ Pantocrator always bears a strong resemblance: large eyes, pensive and deep, divided by a very elongated nose, red lips pressed together in wise silence, hair forming a helmet, a broad forehead and small ears which emphasize the listening attitude. Jesus is represented in a blessing position, in full figure, with his left hand holding the Gospel open in front of the faithful. The right hand is folded in the blessing gesture of the Orthodox/Byzantine rite with the palm open and the thumb and ring finger touching. Inscribed in the halo are the typical Greek letters indicating "He who is", while the pages of the Gospel carry ritual phrases such as: "I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved” – “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden” – “Take my yoke upon you” – “I am the Light of the world” – “Judge not, lest you be judged.” (The evangelical ritual extracts which, although repetitive, vary from icon to icon.) In this type of icon, the iconographer tries to express the reality of God made Man. In the Orthodox tradition, the Church preferred to have its faithful read certain very important sentences from the Christian Liturgy. Small gaps are present, the sponskis of the icon are present in the upper and lower edges.
