Beautiful icon representing the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, dating from the first half of the 19th century and coming from central Russia.
The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated on August 29 and is one of the great feasts of the Christian liturgical calendar.
According to the gospels of Mark and Matthew, Saint John was executed by beheading on the orders of King Herod Antipas.
This episode from the New Testament was, over the centuries, widely represented in religious painting both in the West and in the East.
In Byzantine style, this icon is finely painted with tempera (mixture of egg yolk and natural pigments) on a wooden panel.
Very good original state of conservation. Minor wear and tear, gaps and cracks.
