Gaetano Vetturali (1701-1783)

Architectural whim

Oil on canvas, cm 59,5 x 92

With frame cm 69 x 103,5

The painting examined can be attributed to the stylistic affinities of Gaetano Vetturali, a painter famous for his views and whims in which reality and fantasy are intertwined with high quality results.

Vetturali was born in Lucca, where he trained under the wing of the late Baroque painters Giovanni Domenico Brugieri (1678 - 1744) and Giovanni Domenico Lombardi (1682 - 1751). He achieved considerable success in his native city and in Tuscany thanks to his ability to interpret in an original way the landscape and landscape painting of the Venetian style, giving the scenographic compositions effects of choral spatiality and popular lyricism, However, always married with great composure. In Bologna he approached Ferdinando Bibiena, involved in new prospective studies and in the practice of quadrature, typical of Venetian masters, such as Luca Carlevarijs and Marco Ricci. Also Bibiena studied quadrature and perspective and was an architect and scenographer much appreciated by contemporaries, also author of a treatise on architecture and geometry published in 1711 "Civil architecture prepared on geometry and reduced to perspectives".

During his career Vetturali specialized in the realization of views of Venetian taste and subject and Roman ruins and panoramas.

The canvas in question shows the typical characters of his painting, characterized by a cross of real and imaginative elements. The whim fits on a background characterized by a silvery gray light.

The buildings are taken from a point of view from above and, typical of Vetturali, is the use of an angular perspective that gives prominence to the ruins and gives ample scope to the entire composition. Of great quality also appear the figures, with elongated lines, captured in lively poses and treated with analytical descriptive intention and the clean and airy atmosphere of the skies crossed by veiled clouds.

Some of his works are kept in national museums, such as the Amedeo Lia museum in La Spezia (Landscape with figures and Capriccio with ruins and port) or the Palazzo Mansi Museum in Lucca. Also on the antique market there are some of his paintings, such as Landscape with ruins, village and figures, near the one now under consideration for the setting and the similarity with the small silhouettes that inhabit the landscape.
