Biography
Miriam Rocher (1886 - 1971) Born in Niort in 1886, At the age of fourteen she obtained the prizes of the Deux-Sèvres department and the town of Niort, which opened the doors of Paris to her, since she became a resident of the town for three years.
During this period, she took classes at the Drawing Academy.
She frequented the studio of Puvis de Chavannes, the salon of Antonin Proust and became friends with Henri Martin, from whom she drew a wealth of chromatic nuances as well as a certain fragmentation of the touch. She quickly neglected the Parisian salons in favor of the Toulouse Artistic Union.
A recognized portrait and landscape painter, she emancipated herself more on a technical level from 1904, adopting a more spontaneous, frank and vigorous touch.
His landscapes are tinged with lyricism, while his portraits are more psychological. In 1911-1912, she made an important trip to Mexico and then to South America, traveling through Brazil, where she painted the portrait of President Hermes da Fonseca, before staying for a while in Argentina, opening a painting studio in Buenos Aires which enjoys a solid reputation.
Between the wars, she settled in Algiers, where she took charge of the Artistic Union of North Africa, just created in 1925.
