"Two Sgabello Chairs – Renaissance Style In Walnut – 1880"
Magnificent Renaissance style chairs, made of walnut wood and dating from the 1880s. The first models of these chairs date back to Italy in the 1450s. They are constructed in three parts: back, seat and base. The entire chair is delicately carved, largely with openwork sculptures, in the style of reliefs. The backrest presents the profile figure of two rampant lions protecting a center formed by an ovoid shield with washers. Around the lions there are sculptures of dense vegetation. At the top, above the lions' heads, is the sculpture of a crown, a symbol of power and wisdom. The chair has a beautiful patina. The seat has engraving-like carvings, both in the center and on the sides, reminiscent of a Roman design. In the lower part there is carved the image or mask of a character with eyes, a nose and a mouth, surrounded by a structure in the form of decorative Roman fabrics forming knots. The rear part of the seat has the same shape as the front part, but without sculpture, and the two parts are joined by a spacer. Totally stable and very decorative chair or sgabello, which will attract attention with the richness of its sculpture, the color of its wood and its patina.
