Pair of shelves Liberty
(2) Wood, cm 35 x 24 x 14
This pair of shelves offers an original reflection on the Liberty style. In spite of the prevarication of stained glass and ceramic design, the exhibition of the direct wooden soul that the artist has left free of the brightly acidic colors of Art Nouveau, connects directly the present couple to the English Arts and Crafts movement. The same Art Nouveau style, on the other hand, in Italy named precisely Liberty, took root in the late nineteenth century in an attempt to offer to the different historical era, rich in innovations and adoring the mirage of change, an original decorative shape that reflected both imaginative and modern spirits. Although the Art Nouveau style was totally applied to sculpture, architecture, jewelry, fabrics and interior decoration, it is through the objects that the earliest historians of the same movement were revealed more clearly.
The movement drew its origin from the Anglo-Saxon Arts and Crafts, devoted to the rediscovery of the Middle Ages analyzed in the beauty of its unique natural. The English theory wanted to demonstrate the misleading consequences of mechanical production, proposing craftsmanship as a universal solution to reevaluate the aesthetic value of new design.
In Italy, the Art Nouveau style, also known as floral style, spread from 1902 thanks to the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin, followed by successive national exhibitions. The theoretical activity of the movement, channeled by multiple magazines of the sector indoctrinated by artistic secessions, in Italian territory as well as in Europe, admired the symphonic formal perfection of nature, the only true teacher of geometry and mathematics. The insistent reference to it, as it appears also in the present couple, in which two slender herons stand out on long rushes that have taken the form of lanceolate leaves, was quickly considered as the only mode of action.
