"Great Flemish Painting From The 17th Century, The Crucifixion On Mount Calvary"
COD: 11109Antique Flemish painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on panel artwork attributable to the workshop of the painter Ambrosius Francken II (1581-1632), lacking authentication. A pupil of his father, he worked mainly in Antwerp and specialized in religious paintings. The painting in question depicts the Crucifixion on Mount Calvary (also called Golgotha). A painting of notable pictorial quality with over 50 characters masterfully painted down to the smallest detail and full of fascinating details such as the sweet dog at the bottom right. Instead, at the bottom left we find the soldiers intent on sharing Jesus' clothes. All around, knights in armour, religious people and peasants crowd the scene in a whirlwind that gives dynamism to the composition. At the foot of the cross we glimpse the Madonna in tears, Magdalene and Saint John the Evangelist who is in despair. At the top left, behind one of the thieves, we glimpse splendid buildings in Jerusalem. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with color recovery in some small points, overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 91 x W 121.5 cm.
