" French Officer's Strong-sword, In The Swedish Fashion, Model 1734. France 18th"
This strong sword is a variation on the basis of the regulatory strong sword of 1734, made to order for an officer. Here, the choice was made of a so-called "Swedish-style" mount, to respond to a fairly widespread fashion at the time, probably due to contacts with Swedish officers in the service of France.
The Swedes were regimented from 1690, although their regiment, after having had several names, only took its name of "Royal Swedes" in 1740-1741.
This choice made by certain officers of a "Swedish-style" mount ended up being regulated many years later (the regulations often arriving well after use) and resulted in the 1776 model, completely archaic, and already anachronistic. .
Here, it is indeed a blade corresponding in geometry to the 1734 model. It was made in Solingen.
BLADE: After a very short ricasso or "heel", it takes on a hexagonal section with very sharp edges, which continues to the tip. This shape is typical of the products made in Solingen at the time.
On the external face, we note 3 large hallmarks, the 2 furthest away are identical, they roughly have the shape of an "8 barred in pal" and the one near the guard has the same shape but more complex (4 rings of each side of the central bar)
On the internal face, we find the same three hallmarks featuring  the "8 crossed out in pal" and in addition, near the guard, a sort of letter "P" in mirror.
The blade is very sharp, and in very good condition considering its age. A small dark leather tie ensures the junction with the guard plate.
Length of the blade = 89.8 cm, Width at the heel 3.4 cm, thickness at the heel 7 mm
GUARD: it is a brass guard, with almost symmetrical double shells (called "double pontat"). The internal shell being narrower by approximately 6 mm compared to the external, so as not to interfere with wearing it.
The 2 quillons are symmetrical, the quillon on the side of the guard branch(Knuckle bow branch)  passes through the central part of the double shell: This is the characteristic of the so-called “Swedish” mount.
POMMEL: It is made of brass, olive-shaped, topped with a small flattened button to which the tang of the blade is riveted.
GRIP : It is made of wood, with 4 longitudinal brass strips. The ferrules are made of brass decorated with parallel streaks.

The whole is very homogeneous, in good condition, and should find a deserved place in a collection of weapons from the regiments of the Ancien Régime
